Prince William and Kate Middleton are currently in Boston for several days of public events leading up to the Earthshot Prize Award, and the crowd....didn’t exactly go wild when they showed up at a Boston Celtics game.
ITV News royal correspondent Chris Ship reports that both times William and Kate (who were sitting courtside) appeared on the big screen there were cheers—but also “some boos along with chants of ‘USA, USA.’” He also reported, “Some say it was expected at the Boston team @celtics with such strong Irish roots. But, still, not something the Royals get very often.”

Here’s another video where you can hear the boos a bit better:
Kate and William were booed and jeered at a Boston basketball game. Are they that tone death that they would go to Boston a town full of Irish Americans that hate the English. And a relatively large POC community that doesn’t respect the racist RF! pic.twitter.com/ClAPzvfZab

And a look at William and Kate’s vibe at the game (they seemed pretty unfazed by the booing and chants):

This is William and Kate’s first trip to the United States since 2014, but it’s coming at a pretty controversial time for the royal family. Just days before their trip, Prince William’s godmother Lady Susan Hussey resigned from her royal post due to her racist harassment of Sista Space director Ngozi Fulani at a reception hosted by Queen (Consort) Camilla.
A spokesperson for Prince William and Kate Middleton gave a statement, saying, “I want to address the story relating to a guest attending a reception at Buckingham Palace last night. This is a matter for Buckingham Palace, but as the Prince of Wales spokesperson, I appreciate you’re all here and understand you’ll want to ask about it. So let me address it head on. I was really disappointed to hear about the guests’ experience at Buckingham Palace last night. Obviously, I wasn’t there, but racism has no place in our society. The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect.”
