Prince Harry Says Charles Got Very Jealous of Both Meghan Markle *and* Kate Middleton

If there's one thing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's post-royal exit revelations have taught us, it's that the royal family has a lot of issues to unpack and work through. Like preferably in a combination of group and individual therapy sessions, probably over a span of several years.

For the record, there's no shame in ^^ that ^^. The "wow, you all would benefit from a bunch of therapy" sentiment is true of lots of families (and friend groups and offices and pretty much any other configuration of people spending lots of time interacting with each other), but with the royals, the stakes and public interest factors are dialed alllll the way up to 11.

No one expected Prince Harry's memoir, Spare, to suddenly change the "oh, so the royal family should hire a professional to guide some talks about their stuff" vibes, and, based on early leaks, it (predictably) does not. Harry does a little armchair therapy in the book though, hinting at some jealousy issues his dad, King Charles, struggles with (and low-key suggesting they can be traced back to resentments he felt toward his first wife, Princess Diana).

In one passage from the book, Harry describes an awkward convo with Charles about Meghan joining the royal family, in which Harry got major jealousy vibes from his dad. Essentially, Harry sensed that Charles knew Meghan would be a "novel and resplendent" addition to the royal family who would have the potential to "dominate the monarchy" (or at least the coverage of the monarchy by the press, which is ~notoriously~ unable to resist novel resplendence).

This is where Harry subtly offers his dad some free therapy by connecting his apparent gut reaction to Meghan joining The Firm back to the way Princess Diana dominated the monarchy (/coverage of the monarchy) with her own novel resplendence:

"He had experienced that before and he had no interest in letting it happen to him again," Harry writes, according to excerpts shared by The Telegraph.

Harry is even more direct when it comes to calling out his dad's jealous tendencies when it comes to Prince William and Kate Middleton. In another part of the book, he writes about Charles being unhappy with the amount of publicity Will and Kate were getting back in 2015:
