Prince Harry Reveals That He and Prince William Asked King Charles Not to Marry Camilla

As more details from Prince Harry's hotly anticipated memoir, Spare are revealed, a number of moments from the royal family's past are coming into the spotlight. Along with reports that Harry calls Prince William both his "beloved brother" and "archnemesis," and that their father King Charles, attempted to mediate between them at the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Philip, Harry also apparently spoke out about his and his brother's feelings about Charles's second marriage.

Charles famously divorced William and Harry's mother, Princess Diana in 1996, following several years of formal separation and a messy, public scandal surrounding Charles's extramarital affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. Charles and Camilla would go on to publicly date after their divorces (Camilla was married to Andrew Parker Bowles until 1995) but their relationship remained controversial, and not just with the public.

"When the question came, Willy and I promised our father that we would welcome Camilla to the family," Harry writes in Spare, according to reports from Sky News. "The only thing we asked for in return was that he didn't marry her. 'You don't need to get married again,' we asked him."

For years, there has been speculation as to how William and Harry may have felt toward their step-mother, particularly in light of how it impacted their parents's marriage and the tragic 1997 death of Princess Diana. The brothers have never, previously, spoken out against the relationship. Though it is not clear from the leaked excerpt precisely when Harry and William's conversation with their father took place, Charles and Camilla did ultimately marry in 2005.
