Prince Harry is a Duke, veteran, activist, media executive, and, now, author. The Duke of Sussex is writing a literary memoir, Spare, originally slated to be released by Penguin Random House in late 2022. It will be "the definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him," per the publishing house.

Spare is now set to be released on January 10, 2023, and will be published in print, digital, and audio forms. Prince Harry previously announced that he is donating the memoir's proceeds to charity; upon the official announcement of Spare, Penguin Random House shared that the Duke of Sussex has donated $1.5 million to Sentable and will donate £300,000 to WellChild.

The official description of Spare by Prince Harry is as follows: "It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on. For Harry, this is that story at last. With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief."

When news of the memoir was first released, the Duke of Sussex shared, "I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become. I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story—the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned—I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think."

He added, "I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I’ve learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that’s accurate and wholly truthful."

In the initial announcement, Penguin Random House noted that the memoir will span the full scope of Prince Harry's life thus far, from his childhood as a young prince to his decision to leave the royal family with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. The book will also give readers an inside look at Prince Harry's time in the British military.

"Covering his lifetime in the public eye from childhood to the present day, including his dedication to service, the military duty that twice took him to the frontlines of Afghanistan, and the joy he has found in being a husband and father, Prince Harry will offer an honest and captivating personal portrait, one that shows readers that behind everything they think they know lies an inspiring, courageous, and uplifting human story," wrote Penguin Random House, sharing that they are looking forward to bringing the Duke's words to the public.

"Prince Harry has harnessed his extraordinary life experience as a prince, a soldier, and a knowledgeable advocate for social issues, establishing himself as a global leader recognized for his courage and openness. It is for that reason we’re excited to publish his honest and moving story," Markus Dohle, CEO of Penguin Random House, said in a statement.

In the days leading up to the release, a series of leaks have appeared, detailing Prince William assaulting Harry, and how he calls William his "beloved brother" and his "archnemesis," and how King Charles reportedly tried to mediate between his sons.

Prince Harry's decision to publish a memoir comes after his wife wrote a book of her own—a children's book entitled The Bench. The story, about the bonds between fathers and sons, quickly became a New York Times bestseller.
