When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry married in Windsor on May 19, 2018, it was a huge security operation. And the couple has explored how that impacted them in their new Netflix documentary, the first half of which has been released today.

After discussing the volume of news coverage ahead of her wedding, Meghan noted, “Then it started to get scary.” The program showed the front page of the Evening Standard newspaper with the story ‘Meghan’s Anthrax Threat Terror.’ The February 2018 story told how Scotland Yard was investigating after "a letter containing white powder purporting to be anthrax was sent to Meghan Markle at Kensington Palace.” The story also shared that the letter was understood to contain a racist message.

“This was on the heels of those terrorist attacks, right, so there was so much concern about the wedding,” Meghan said. “It was just so scary and they were just talking about getting snipers.” Harry nodded, “It was a public event right.”

“Behind the scenes of all that,” Meghan continued, “I was just turtling.”

In the series, the couple also spoke about the media intrusion that they faced, with Meghan describing how when the news of the relationship broke that there were photographers outside of her home and cameras even set up in her neighbor’s property. Additionally, they spoke about race and the role they believe it played in how she was received by the British press and on social media. Harry pointed out that harassment is mostly online now, in contrast to his mother’s day when it was physical pursuit. A short extract from Princess Diana’s controversial Panorama interview also features in episode one despite the fact that Prince William has called for it never to be aired again.
