When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got engaged in 2017, they went for a very distinct look with their official photos. Photographer Alexi Lubomirski is sharing the secrets behind that magical shoot and some of the iconic images that are a part of his new book, The Sittings (2003-2023).

He shot the photos in December 2017 and decided to replicate a moment in time of Audrey Hepburn buttoned up in an overcoat with her husband, Mel Ferrer. That bit of inspiration turned out to be one of the Sussexes’ most iconic shots from their engagement. Meghan snuggled up close to Harry, artfully placing her hand on his face to show off her stunning diamond ring. The couple blissfully closed their eyes as he wrapped her in his jacket — and in his love. Harry and Meghan loved his black-and-white imagery so much that they also hired Lubomirski for their 2018 wedding.

Telling People that it was “probably the most high-pressure job” he’s had in his career, he recalled what it was like to snap their photos immediately after the world watched them wed. “I’d only had three minutes to get them into the garden, take pictures, and it took three minutes to get them to the garden,” he explained. “And there was one shot of the couple sitting in the rose garden, which is an image that I got. It was that first time they were alone, as in out of the public site after being married. So it was a really, very special moment, this moment of calm.”

Some of his favorite Sussex wedding photos are also in his new book, The Sittings (2003-2023), which will be released on May 31 in the U.S. We have a feeling he will be sending a complimentary copy to Harry and Meghan, who will no doubt inspire a few royal fans to buy the book for their own coffee tables.
