Next week, Kensington Palace will host an event honoring Princess Diana. The private reception is being held for donors who funded the statue of the Princess of Wales, now in place in the palace gardens. But representatives of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently confirmed that the couple will not be journeying back to the UK for the event.
The October 19 reception was postponed from this summer, when Prince William and Prince Harry unveiled the Diana statue on what would have been their mother's 60th birthday. Due to Covid restrictions, the July unveiling was small, attended by only close family members of Princess Diana—her brother, Charles, 9th Earl Spencer, and her sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Jane Fellowes, Baroness Fellowes, along with the statue's sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, and the Sunken Garden's designer, Pip Morrison.
Prince Harry and Meghan will not return to the UK for next week's donor event; however, People reports that Harry is reaching out to donors privately. Prince William will be in attendance, as will musician Elton John.
The statue unveiling was the last time Prince Harry traveled to the UK. The Duchess of Sussex did not attend, as she had just given birth to her daughter, Lilibet, born in June. The couple now has two small children, with Lilibet at four-months-old and Archie, age 2.
Prior to the statue's unveiling, Prince Harry and Prince William issued a rare joint statement, discussing their mother's legacy.
"Today, on what would have been our Mother's 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character — qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better," the statement read.
"Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy."
