In December last year, the Duchess of Sussex announced her first public investment in a startup company that makes oat milk lattes with ethically-sourced ingredients. And now, she and Prince Harry have taken things a step further by becoming “impact partners” with sustainable investing company Ethic.

The couple’s partnership, and the fact that they are also investors in and with Ethic, was announced on their Archewell website, on Ethic's online platforms, and via an article in the New York TimesDealBook. “From the world I come from, you don’t talk about investing, right?” Meghan told DealBook. “You don’t have the luxury to invest. That sounds so fancy.” She added about Harry, “My husband has been saying for years, ‘Gosh, don’t you wish there was a place where if your values were aligned like this, you could put your money to that same sort of thing?’”

On their Archewell website the couple wrote, “We believe it’s time for more people to have a seat at the table when decisions are made that impact everyone. We want to rethink the nature of investing to help solve the global issues we all face.

Our impact partnership with Ethic is one of the ways we put our values in action.”

Ethic describes itself as creating “personalised sustainability solutions to help investors transition money to towards companies that treat people and the planet with respect.” It was co-founded in 2015 by Johny Mair, Doug Scott and Jay Lipman, who have backgrounds in finance and investing, engineering and design. Today the three founders said they were “so excited” about Harry and Meghan’s partnership. “With their partnership, our shared vision for a world in which all investing is sustainable investing can reach many millions around the globe,” Ethic said in a statement. “After all, we are all investors. Whether or not you have an investment portfolio today, you still make conscious decisions each and every day about where you choose to invest your time, money and energy. We all have the opportunity to invest in our communities—and to align our values with our actions.”

The company said that Harry and Meghan became investors in Ethic “earlier this year” and also have investments managed by them.

Since stepping back as working royals in 2020, Harry and Meghan have achieved their ambition to become financially independent. They have signed major deals with Netflix and Spotify as well as pursuing other individual projects such as Meghan’s authoring children’s book The Bench.
