As legal proceedings against Associated Newspapers began at High Court on Monday, Prince Harry made an unexpected appearance in London—his arrival marking the first time Harry has ventured back home since he attended the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Duke of Sussex—who, last year, joined Elizabeth Hurley, Elton John, and other high-profile figures in taking legal action against Associated Newspapers for illegal information gathering—arrived at High Court for the first day of the hearing.

The lawsuit claims that Harry and the other plaintiffs were the victims of a series of "unlawful acts," including "the hiring of private investigators to secretly place listening devices inside people's cars and homes" and "commissioning of individuals to surreptitiously listen into and record people's live, private telephone calls whilst they were taking place," BAZAAR.com previously reported.

Associated Newspapers is the publisher of the Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday, and the Mail Online.

The publisher is expected to attempt to have the case thrown out during the four-day preliminary hearing.

A spokesperson for Associated Newspapers previously denied the allegations as "preposterous smears which appear to be nothing more than a pre-planned and orchestrated attempt to drag the Mail titles into the phone hacking scandal concerning articles up to 30 years old." They said, "These unsubstantiated and highly defamatory claims—based on no credible evidence—appear to be simply a fishing expedition by claimants and their lawyers, some of whom have already pursued cases elsewhere."

Harry and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have both previously taken legal action against the publisher. In February 2021, the duke accepted damages for a case that accused the company of libel and slander. Another case, involving a story about his bid for private security when in the U.K., is still ongoing.
