Prince Harry Will Donate $1.5 Million of His Memoir Proceeds to the Sentebale Charity

Prince Harry just announced that he will donate $1.5 million of the proceeds from his upcoming memoir to the charity Sentebale. The Duke of Sussex made the announcement during an appearance at the Sentebale Polo Cup in Aspen, Colorado today.
Sentebale, which Harry founded alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006, is dedicated to supporting the wellbeing and mental health of vulnerable children and young people in the countries of Lesotho, Botswana, and Malawi.
"The Sentebale Polo Cup is critical to securing the funds needed to advance this important mission, and I’m thrilled to be able to support Sentebale, both in person and financially through a separate charitable donation to meet this immediate need," the Duke said in a statement. "This is one of several donations I plan to make to charitable organisations and I’m grateful to be able to give back in this way for the children and communities who gravely need it."
The Duke also noted that the "refocused mission" of Sentebale is to address the most immediate needs of vulnerable children in South Africa, "helping them access vital health services, receive necessary care, and build skills to be more resilient and self-sufficient in the future."
The Sentebale Polo Cup is an annual charity sports match which represents the charity's single largest fundraising event. Unlike previous years, the 2021 Polo Cup will not be a large-scale public event, due to safety concerns arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the match will be hosted with significantly fewer guests than usual, and rigorous masking, testing, and vaccination requirements will be enforced.
Prince Harry's literary memoir, which is slated for release by Penguin Random House in late 2022, is billed as "the definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him." Harry himself shared that he is writing the book "not as the prince I was born, but as the man I have become... My hope is that in telling my story—the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned—I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think."
When the book was announced last month, the Duke also stated that he will donate all proceeds from the memoir to charity, so Sentebale will be the first of many deserving recipients.
