Prince Harry Arrives at the Funeral of His Grandfather, Prince Philip

Prince Harry is back home.

The Duke of Sussex was in attendance for the funeral of his late grandfather, Prince Philip, at Windsor Castle today. Prince Harry's appearance marks the first time he has returned to England since stepping down as a senior working member of the royal family along with his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

The duke appeared alongside other members of his family, including his father Prince Charles, and older brother, Prince William, in a procession following a custom Range Rover (co-designed by Prince Philip before his passing) carrying the Duke of Edinburgh's casket. For the ceremony, Prince Harry appeared in a black suit, as the queen decided that no royal family members should appear in military dress for the event. The Duke of Sussex did however, wear his KCVO Neck Order and Star, Afghanistan Campaign medal, Gold Jubilee medal, and Diamond Jubilee medal pinned onto his blazer. Both Prince Harry and his grandfather shared a connection through their time serving in the British Armed Forces.

Prince Harry was not joined by his wife, Duchess Meghan, for the funeral because she was cleared by her doctor to travel abroad at this time. The duchess is currently expecting the couple's second child, a baby girl, and is too far along in her pregnancy to have made the trip.

The Duke of Sussex honored the life of Prince Philip in a statement earlier this week, reflecting on not just his life of service, but his role as also a loving grandfather.

"My grandfather was a man of service, honour and great humour. He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm—and also because you never knew what he might say next," read Harry's message. "He will be remembered as the longest reigning consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince and a Duke. But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right 'til the end."
