Prince Charles Keeps a Special Reminder of Princes William and Harry in His Office
Prince Charles was only diagnosed with the novel coronavirus last Monday when he tested positive for the disease after experiencing mild symptoms, but now that he's recovered, he's back to business as usual. Or, well, as usual as royal business can be during a global pandemic.
Today, the Duke of Rothesay, as Charles is known in Scotland, where he is currently residing, helped to virtually mark the opening of NHS Nightingale Hospital, a conference center in London which has been adapted into a temporary medical facility with space for 4,000 beds.
He called in via video to the ceremony, and offered a message of support for those involved in getting the medical facility up and running in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis.
"If I may say so, I was enormously touched to have been asked to open the Nightingale Hospital as part of a mass mobilization to withstand the coronavirus crisis," he said.
"It is without doubt a spectacular and almost unbelievable feat of work in every sense–from its speed of construction as we’ve heard to its size and the skills of those who have created it. An example, if ever one was needed of how the impossible can be made possible and how we can achieve the unthinkable through human will and ingenuity."
Prince Charles called the process of converting the space into a hospital "incredible," and thanked everyone involved in the effort from the planners and the builders to the doctors and nurses who will eventually use the facility.
And he spoke of his own bout of the coronavirus sharing: "Now I was one of the lucky ones to have COVID-19 relatively mildly ... But for some it will be a much harder journey. I am therefore so relieved that everyone can now have the reassurance that they will get all the necessary technical care that they may need and every chance to return to a normal life."
Prince Charles closed his message by acknowledging the icon for which the hospital is named.
"I need hardly say that the name of this hospital could not have been more aptly chosen. Florence Nightingale, The Lady with the Lamp, brought hope and healing to thousands in their darkest hour. In this dark time, this place will be a shining light," he said.
"It is symbolic of the selfless care and devoted service taking place in innumerable settings, with countless individuals, throughout the United Kingdom."

In addition to news of Charles's video call this morning, Clarence House shared a photo of the process (above), which offers a rare peek at the royal's workspace in Birkhall, his Scottish residence.
Not only did the picture reveal that the Prince of Wales somehow fashioned an iPad stand out of his book, Harmony.
But if you look closely, you can see family photos covering nearly every surface of the room, a collection which includes pictures of Charles's mother and father, the Queen and Prince Philip, his late grandmother the Queen mum, and of course his two sons, Princes William and Harry.
Other notable snaps include a sweet portrait of Prince George, and a picture of Charles and Camilla together.
