Prince Andrew's car-crash BBC interview to be made into a movie

When Prince Andrew sat down with BBC reporter Emily Maitlis for his Newsnight interview in November 2019, little did we know of the impact his words would have. In the interview, the royal discussed his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and refuted Virginia Giuffre's sexual assault allegations, claiming to have been at Pizza Express on the night he is said to have assaulted her. Shortly afterwards, Prince Andrew stepped down from his royal duties, and was stripped of several titles by his mother, the Queen. Now, a movie is set to be made of the royal's car-crash interview, with Hugh Grant tipped to play him on the big screen.
The movie, titled Scoop, will be written by Your Honor's Peter Moffat and filming is due to commence later this year, in November. A director is yet to have been assigned, and casting for the movie has not begun, but Hilary Salmon – of The Lighthouse Film & TV production company – told Deadline that there are "of course, thoughts" about who will star in the film. Although, she did stress that "no one is attached" to the movie as of yet and did not comment on claims that Grant would be starring.
The film will be based on Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews, a book by former Newsnight producer Sam McAlister. Speaking about Scoop's plot, Salmon described it as being "about how the BBC’s Newsnight team got the scoop, then the actual filming of it. The other thing is, 'why did he agree to do it?'."
She continued: "How was it that he decided it was a good idea to do a great big long interview with Emily Maitlis on the BBC?"
"All the opportunities that Emily gave him to say the right things to justify his friendship with Epstein, to say how sorry he was, [were wasted]" Salmon added. "Newsnight couldn’t have been fairer to him," she went on, pointing out that Andrew "thought it had gone extremely well" despite the public thinking much the opposite.
As for whether Buckingham Palace will have any involvement in the movie, Salmon told Deadline: "We’ve reached out to a wide variety of people who were involved behind the scenes of the interview and we're still in that process."
Prince Andrew has denied all the allegations made against him.
