  • On March 6 of last year, the Detroit DJ and artist Carl Craig took over the warehouse-like basement of Dia Beacon, a former Nabisco factory turned art mecca an hour’s drive north of New York City. His long-planned sound installation, called <a href="https://www.diaart.org/exhibition/exhibitions-projects/carl-craig-partyafter-party-exhibition/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Party/After-Party" class="link rapid-noclick-resp"><em>Party/After-Party</em></a><em>,</em> brought his familiar world (techno tracks, color-shifting lights) to an unfamiliar crowd: museumgoers better acquainted with the Flavins and Judds. The pandemic soon set in; Dia didn’t reopen until late summer, this time with reserved tickets and lower headcounts. But the intimate overwhelm of <em>Party/After-Party</em> still turns up in full force—maybe fuller, given what a novelty it now is to feel bass rattling one’s bones, to feel alone in company (even if it’s just that one couple across the dark room). Craig designed mechanized shutters that flutter open partway through, recreating a sensation he once experienced upstairs at <a href="https://garage.vice.com/en_us/article/wxq3ew/party-on-at-dia-beacon" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:Berlin’s Berghain" class="link rapid-noclick-resp">Berlin’s Berghain</a>: the first rays of dawn streaking across the dance floor. The installation is extended till summer, when things might be waking up.
