Pregnant Mickey Guyton’s Performance Is the Most Powerful Moment of the ACM Awards

Country singer Mickey Guyton belted out a call to action on racism, sexism, abuse of girls and more with her rendition of “What Are You Going to Tell Her” Sept. 16 at the 55th Annual American Country Music Awards. The 37-year-old momma-to-be was introduced by Tim McGraw onstage at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, one of the three venues that hosted the event.

“There’s not a single woman that I know that hasn’t gone through something, and I just hope that this song and people hearing me sing it inspires change,” the singer told ET. “I hope this song gives everybody that fire within them to change to help make change for our future.”

Another rising star of the night Kelsea Ballerini immediately tweeted, “Wow. Mickey Guyton that is a performance that will make people listen, think, and change. Me included. You are a force.”

Making the moment even more meaningful, Guyton rubbed her baby bump as she sang. Netizen Elizabeth Lang replied to Ballerini’s post, tweeting: “Such an important message with her hand on her future child.”

“Starting my career off, I never thought of myself as some activist,” Guyton told ET prior to the performance. “I was actually always someone that kind of just stayed in the back and didn’t want to make any noise or rock the boat — and then everything kind of shifted for me. To step in that role as a woman, as a Black woman, it is such an honor that people are giving me this opportunity to be heard and to hopefully incite change. It means the world to me.”
