Here Are Our Predictions for the 2019 Emmys

Emmys season is upon us once more, and while the night always holds a few surprises (remember Merritt Wever accepting her 2013 award with “I gotta go, bye”?), it’s usually easy enough to get a sense of who will go home a winner. Here are our Emmy predictions, in case you need help filling out your ballot.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

Stephen Root, Barry (HBO)

Henry Winkler, Barry (HBO)

Anthony Carrigan, Barry (HBO)

Alan Arkin, The Kominsky Method (Netflix)

Tony Shalhoub, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)

PREDICTED WINNER: Tony Hale, Veep (HBO)

Hale’s work as Selina Meyer’s beleaguered, besotted assistant, Gary, on Veep won him two Emmys in 2013 and 2015, and he’s likely to win one final time.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Sarah Goldberg, Barry (HBO)

Sian Clifford, Fleabag (Amazon)

Olivia Colman, Fleabag (Amazon)

PREDICTED WINNER: Betty Gilpin, GLOW (Netflix)

Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live (NBC)

Alex Borstein, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)

Marin Hinkle, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)

Anna Chlumsky, Veep (HBO)

Gilpin was previously nominated in this category for her role as Debbie Egan on Glow, but 2019 looks like it could be her year to take home the Emmy.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Christina Applegate, Dead to Me (Netflix)

Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep (HBO)

Natasha Lyonne, Russian Doll (Netflix)

Catherine O’Hara, Schitt’s Creek (CBC)

PREDICTED WINNER: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag (Amazon)

Waller-Bridge and Louis-Dreyfus will likely duke it out, but Waller-Bridge seems favored to ultimately win. (Sorry, Nataha!)

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Anthony Anderson, Black-ish (ABC)

Don Cheadle, Black Monday (Showtime)

PREDICTED WINNER: Ted Danson, The Good Place (NBC)

Michael Douglas, The Kominsky Method (Netflix)

Bill Hader, Barry (HBO)

Eugene Levy, Schitt’s Creek (CBC)

Danson hasn’t won an Emmy in 26 years, but his performance on The Good Place might be strong enough to help him beat out Hader.

Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Jason Bateman, Ozark (Netflix)

Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us (NBC)

PREDICTED WINNER: Kit Harington, Game of Thrones (HBO)

Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul (AMC)

Billy Porter, Pose (FX)

Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us (NBC)

Harington looks to be the favorite, although Porter could give him a run for his money.

Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones (HBO)

Jodie Comer, Killing Eve (BBC America)

Viola Davis, How to Get Away With Murder (ABC)

Laura Linney, Ozark (Netflix)

Mandy Moore, This Is Us (NBC)

PREDICTED WINNER: Sandra Oh, Killing Eve (BBC America)

Robin Wright, House of Cards (Netflix)

Even if Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s spy thriller loses to Game of Thrones for outstanding drama series, its odds are good in this category; Oh and Comer are both nominated.

Outstanding Limited Series

Chernobyl (HBO)

Escape at Dannemora (Showtime)

Fosse/Verdon (FX)

Sharp Objects (HBO)

PREDICTED WINNER: When They See Us (Netflix)

Ava DuVernay’s Netflix miniseries chronicling the case of the Central Park Five garnered rave reviews and will more than likely edge out Sharp Objects.

Outstanding Comedy Series

Barry (HBO)

Fleabag (Amazon)

The Good Place (NBC)

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon)

Russian Doll (Netflix)

Schitt’s Creek (CBC)

PREDICTED WINNER: Veep (HBO)

It’s hard to imagine Veep not getting a nod for its final season, but Fleabag could surprise us all.

Outstanding Drama Series

Better Call Saul (AMC)

Bodyguard (Netflix)

PREDICTED WINNER: Game of Thrones (HBO)

Killing Eve (BBC America)

Ozark (Netflix)

Pose (FX)

Succession (HBO)

This Is Us (NBC)

We can say fairly confidently that this category is all but owned by Game of Thrones.

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

Jonathan Banks, Better Call Saul (AMC)

Giancarlo Esposito, Better Call Saul (AMC)

Alfie Allen, Game of Thrones (HBO)

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones (HBO)

PREDICTED WINNER: Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones (HBO)

Michael Kelly, House of Cards (Netflix)

Chris Sullivan, This Is Us (NBC)

Even throughout the HBO behemoth’s uneven final season, Game of Thrones’s Dinklage received critical praise, so he’s our pick for best supporting actor.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Gwendoline Christie, Game of Thrones (HBO)

Lena Headey, Game of Thrones (HBO)

Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones (HBO)

Maisie Williams, Game of Thrones (HBO)

Fiona Shaw, Killing Eve (BBC America)

PREDICTED WINNER: Julia Garner, Ozark (Netflix)

Perhaps it’s perverse not to give the nod to a Game of Thrones player here, given the stacked lineup, but will voters be able to split the difference between the fantasy show’s female stars?

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie

Emily Watson, Chernobyl (HBO)

Margaret Qualley, Fosse/Verdon (FX)

PREDICTED WINNER: Patricia Clarkson, Sharp Objects (HBO)
