Samsung made a strong first impression with its ultra-premium Chromebook in 2020, standing out against the typically low-budget market of Chrome OS devices. But some may have found its gorgeous 4K AMOLED screen to be just as startling as its $1,000 starting price.
Launching at the far more attractive price of $549.99, the new Galaxy Chromebook 2 maintains the objective as a premium Chrome OS laptop, while clearly being a more budget-conscious offering than its predecessor.
Samsung has evolved the formula with thoughtful hardware revisions that aim to make the device both more wallet-friendly and significantly more power efficient.
While boasting a 1080p screen this time, the Galaxy Chromebook 2 will be the first Chromebook with a QLED display capable of a claimed 100% DCI-P3 color reproduction.
The added benefit of that lower-resolution display, along with the inclusion of a more efficient 10th-Gen Intel Core i3 CPU (versus the Core i5 in the first Galaxy Chromebook), is big gains in battery life, with Samsung claiming up to 13 hours of runtime before needing a wall outlet.
Despite the lower launch price, the Galaxy Chromebook 2 retains the premium aluminum chassis in the striking Fiesta Red and Mercury Grey trims, the same 2-in-1 foldable hinge for use in tablet form, the fast Wi-Fi 6 wireless card, 8GB of RAM and fast SSD storage. Samsung also touts improvements to the dual, down-firing speakers. But, unlike the 2020 model, the new device won’t come with a stylus included.
