We love a good adaptation around here. And when it comes to Naomi Alderman's bestselling novel The Power, we cannot be more excited for Prime Video's upcoming nine-part series.

The book was first published under the same name in 2016, so it may have been a while since you last read it and need a refresher on what we can expect from the new show. Or, perhaps you skipped out on this thrilling science-fiction tale altogether, in which case, you'll definitely want to be checking out the new on-screen adaptation and immerse yourself in this clever and gripping piece of feminist fiction.

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming show.

What's The Power about?

In the novel, the plot focuses on a rewritten history in which the sudden ability blooms in women that allows them to electrocute people by touch. With this new power comes a reimagining of how the world develops, and the novel takes place around five thousand years after the fact, where society has turned into a matriarchy.

The story follows the lives of five specific characters; Allie, a young woman who uses her powers to kill her abusive foster father, Roxy, the daughter of a London mob boss who seeks revenge for her mother's murderers, Margot, a politician and advocate for the training of women's powers, Jocelyn, Margot's daughter, and Tunde, a male journalist who travels across the globe to document the power.

According to the series' official synopsis, it looks like the on-screen version will also traverse across the globe:

"The Power is our world, but for one twist of nature. Suddenly, and without warning, teenage girls develop the power to electrocute people at will. The series features a cast of remarkable characters from London to Seattle, Nigeria to Eastern Europe, as the Power evolves from a tingle in teenagers’ collarbones to a complete reversal of the power balance of the world."

The book was released to high acclaim, which praised it as an essential piece of feminist work.

Who's starring in The Power adaptation?

Cinematic powerhouse Toni Collette will be starring as Margot in the new series. Alongside her, Halle Bush, Ria Zmitrowicz, and Auli'i Cravalho will be appearing as Allie, Roxy, and Jos respectively.

The series will also star John Leguizamo as Rob and Toheeb Jimoh as Tunde, and Alice Eve, Josh Charles, and Rob Delaney.

It bodes well that behind the scenes, Alderman herself is credited as having penned two of the episodes and is also backed by a female-driven writing team. Plus, there's the litany of female directors, who collectively have worked across hit shows such as Killing Eve, The Handmaid's Tale, and Happy Valley.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Collette said that the all-female team, “contributed so much in terms of vision and collaborating, truly collaborating.” We wouldn't expect anything less!
