Port Canaveral Employees and Cruise Passengers Banded Together to Save a Man Who Collapsed After Disembarking
Three employees at Port Canaveral in Florida are being credited with saving a man’s life after he collapsed in the port’s parking garage.
In a video posted to the port’s Facebook page, employees explained how they found the man around 7 a.m. Sunday and took steps to help him until emergency services arrived.
"All of a sudden, I hear a bunch of people screaming," one employee, Sean Summers, said in the Facebook video. “I run over. I notice a man sprawled down on the ground. And, then, basically, I grabbed my radio, and said: 'I need a paramedic, ASAP. Please send a deputy.'"
Another employee, Stephanie Dobson, came over to manage the scene and Josh Clayton, who heard the distress call, ran to get a portable defibrillator. The man did not have a pulse so they initiated one shock, which got his heart pumping again.
Two other passengers, a nurse and a doctor, assisted by performing CPR until emergency services arrived.
Dobson said in the video that had the man “been in a shuttle on his way to the airport or to home, whatever it might be, it might have been a different outcome, where it wasn't as positive as this one is."
When the passenger was taken away by the ambulance, he was conscious and talking. “Our best wishes to the passenger and his recovery,” reps for the port wrote in their post.
