Pixar Will Reportedly Feature Its First Transgender Character In An Upcoming Film

Pixar is reportedly set to feature its first transgender character in an upcoming animated project.

In ground-breaking news for representation, it appears Pixar has begun its search for the voice of new character Jess, described in a casting call as a 14-year-old transgender girl.

Organization Trans March shared the announcement in a post on Twitter, clarifying that they had spoken with the casting director of the as-yet-untitled project.

In the flyer, Pixar confirms that it is looking to fill a "youth voice-over role" for an "upcoming" animated title, although it does not confirm whether the project will be a feature-length movie or one of its shorts.

"The character, Jess, is a 14-year-old transgender girl. She's compassionate, funny, and always has your back," the character description reads.

The call-out goes on to add that it's looking to audition actresses between the ages of 12 and 17 who "can authentically portray a 14-year-old transgender girl", suggesting that the role may go to a transgender actress.

This exciting news follows the announcement of a brand new Soul spin-off, 22 vs Earth.

The upcoming short film, directed by Pixar stalwart Kevin Nolting, will revisit Tina Fey's sceptical soul 22 long before she ever meets Jamie Foxx's Joe Gardner.

Set before the events of Soul, 22 vs Earth will see 22 defy the rules of The Great Before by refusing to go to Earth, shortly before enlisting a gang of five other new souls in an attempt to start a rebellion.
