Pink Taught Her Kids A Beautiful Lesson in Her iHeartRadio Acceptance Speech & We Don't Want to Forget It

As much as we may want compliments, it can sometimes be difficult to accept those words of affirmation. It’s not uncommon for people to deflect or minimize their positive attributes and accomplishments. Women, especially, are often taught that humility is a virtue — and any sense of pride is a display of arrogance.

Well, that’s a load of bullsh*t, and Pink knows it.

The singer received the Icon Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Monday. After singing a moving duet with Kelly Clarkson, Pink stepped up to the mic for her acceptance speech. She embraced the moment and the honor while acknowledging that it’s not always easy to do so.

“I usually do try to joke or be self-deprecating in these moments,” she said, “but I want to be a better friend to myself tonight.”

We’d be lying if we said that didn’t give us chills. It’s such a simple yet powerful message. We can sometimes be our own worst critics or, again, shy away from the spotlight. But why should that be the case? The “What About Us” singer’s friends and loved ones must be ecstatic for her, and why shouldn’t she treat herself with the same unbridled joy? Imagine how much better we all would feel if we treated ourselves like a friend would.

Imagine if, at ages 11 and 6, you got to watch your mom share that message in front of the world. How incredible is it that her daughter Willow and son Jameson are being taught that lesson at such a young age?

“So I would like to try and say something honest. Every room I walk into, my heart walks in first. Every lyric that I write is my heart crying, raging, hoping screaming pleading … And some of you find that annoying and some of you find it brave.”

She received an overwhelming round of applause from those who know it’s the latter.

“I just find it necessary,” she said. “I think as human beings we are vulnerable from the time we are born until the time we die and most of us spend our entire lives running from that. Vulnerability means the ability to be wounded. I have decided to make vulnerability my life’s work.”

The “Get This Party Started” singer went on to thank her fans, her manager, her husband Carey Hart — “If he loved me perfectly, I would have nothing to say” — her friends, her collaborators, and her road crew.

“Most of all, Willow and Jameson,” Pink said. “I’m grateful to be your mama.”

And we know she means that. In an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Pink confirmed that she really does put her children above all else.

“I told [Willow], ‘I know you have things you want to do, and also this isn’t just my job. I worked really hard for this. There’s a handful of people that get to do this, and I’m good at it and I care about it very much, and I think in a small way I help people, I hope. But that doesn’t mean it means more than your childhood or what you mean to me. I’ll walk away tomorrow; if that’s what you want, I’ll walk away tomorrow.'”
