Catherine O’Hara Named Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series at 2021 Golden Globes

Another year, another winner for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series.

Catherine O’Hara just won the statuette for her role as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek. The 78th annual Golden Globes virtually took place tonight on NBC, where she edged out Lily Collins for Emily in Paris (played Emily Cooper), Kaley Cuoco for The Flight Attendant (played Cassie Bowden), Elle Fanning for The Great (played Catherine the Great) and Jane Levy for Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist (played Zoey Clarke).

She’s joining a long list of previous winners, including Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag, Rachel Brosnahan for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Tracee Ellis Ross for Black-ish, Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Gina Rodriguez for Jane the Virgin, Amy Poehler for Parks and Recreation, Lena Dunham for Girls, Laura Dern for Enlightened, Laura Linney for The Big C, Toni Collette for United States of Tara, Tina Fey for 30 Rock and America Ferrera for Ugly Betty.

This particular honor was first awarded at the 19th Golden Globe Awards on March 5, 1962, under the title Best TV Star-Female, grouping all genres of television series together. The award honored actresses in both comedy and drama genres until 1969, when it was split into categories that honored comedic and dramatic performances separately (thank goodness).

The 78th annual Golden Globes were hosted by Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who previously helmed the awards show in 2013, 2014 and 2015. However, this is the first time they did it from opposite sides of the country.

Congrats, O’Hara! That was some serious competition.
