This Ph.D. candidate was inspired by drag: ‘This is just super empowering’

In this episode of Dragged, cohosts Marti Gould Cummings and Jasmine Rice Labeija help Alexa become Thee Sis, a pedagogical and pride-inspired glamazon.

Alexa might be the first “Doctor of Drag.” The Ph.D. student said drag queens inspired her education.

“I love drag. And I was really inspired by drag to write my doctoral dissertation on LGBTQ bullying,” Alexa said.

“Doctor of Drag! That is so fierce. Ph.D!” Marti said.

As far as Thee Sis (like “thesis”) was concerned, Alexa wanted her drag persona to go big or go home.

“I want everything really big — big hair, colorful,” Alexa said.

When Alexa got her makeup done it was all about the sparkle.

“She’s got the glitter bringing out her gorgeous cheeks,” Marti noted.

“This is just super empowering. So dramatic. So big. I feel like its emboldened my personality even more just because it’s so big,” Alexa said of her makeup.

For her larger-than-life look, Jasmine and Marti picked an off the shoulder dress with all of the pride flag colors, a rainbow high-ponytail wig and lots of glittery accessories.

“I feel incredible. I feel so beautiful and fierce and confident and amazing!” Alexa said. “All the colors. All of the bigness. I love it!”
