On Tuesday, November 30, a 15-year-old sophomore opened fire at Oxford High School in suburban Detroit, killing four students: Justin Shilling, 17; Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; and Hana St. Juliana, 14.

One of the victims, Tate Myre, was a junior honors student and varsity running back. In a tweet posted by the Oxford football team, Tate was remembered for his talent and high accomplishments: “Tate was on varsity since his freshman year and was an honor student. Tate was a great young man with a bright future and beloved by all.”

Now an online petition has been started in honor of Tate, requesting that the high school’s stadium—currently named after their mascot, a wildcat—be renamed to Tate Myre Stadium. The appeal previously asked for 50,000 signatures. That number was quickly surpassed, and as of press time, had been set to 300,000. It has currently collected over 214,000 signatures and according to Change.org, has become one of the site’s top-signed petitions.

“One of the students was killed in an attempt to disarm the shooter, this student is Tate Myre,” the petition description reads. “Tate is not just a hero to his fellow students at Oxford high school but a legend, his act of bravery should be remembered forever and passed down through generations.”

In an interview with the Detroit Free Press, Tate’s football and wrestling coach Ross Wingert said Tate ran toward the gunman in an attempt to disarm him. However, the school video tape evidence and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department has not confirmed this.

This weekend, the Detroit Lions and University of Michigan Wolverines football team will honor the victims of Tuesday’s shooting. The Lions will wear a decal on their helmets during Sunday’s game. The Wolverines will wear a special patch on their jersey, in the shape of an Oxford “O,” with four blue hearts to represent all four victims, and a “TM 42” for Tate.
