Personal-use firewood permits now available in Union County

LA GRANDE — The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest as of May 1 is offering free personal-use firewood permits, with a limit of 10 cords per household per year.

Permits are available over the counter at local Forest Service offices. Calling ahead is recommended to confirm permit availability, as it can vary depending on the district, the availability of wood and the type of permit.

The local office in La Grande, 3502 Highway 30, is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Call at 541-962-8500.

Firewood permits are available through Nov. 30.

Depending on the season, snow levels in the winter or high fire danger in the summer can affect the availability of wood and/or permits.

A permit is valid through the termination date stated on the permit. Firewood permits are non-refundable and non-transferrable. Maps of where firewood can harvest will be provided with the permit.

Commercial-use firewood permits also may be available — contact the district office regarding availability or to be notified.

In Union County, fuelwood manuals and tags are available at Island City Market and Deli and at Miller's Home Center, both on Island Avenue.

During periods of high fire danger, restrictions that prohibit fuelwood cutting may be enacted. For Industrial Fire Precaution Levels, contact the nearest National Forest office, visit https://tinyurl.com/woodpermits or call 541-523-1234.
