We may not know when the Avengers are going to assemble at your local multiplex, but we do finally know when their theme park is opening at Disneyland.
In an announcement posted to the Facebook page of D23 — the official Disney fan club — the park confirmed that the Avengers Campus will open at the Disney California Adventure Park, part of the Disneyland complex in Anaheim, on July 18.
JUST ANNOUNCED: Avengers Campus will officially open at Disney California Adventure on July 18!
The venue for the announcement makes a lot of sense given that the first sneak peek Disney offered — including the concept art reposted with today’s announcement — came at the D23 Expo last year, just a couple of months after it secured the necessary permits to start construction.
Construction delays are part and parcel of the business, so Disney being comfortable announcing an opening date likely means that the work that is happening at the former Bug’s Land — behind walls emblazoned with the Stark Industries logo — is going well. We’re not expecting something quite as sprawling as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which is its own park, but there will be plenty for Marvel fans to love.
The narrative behind the Avengers campus is that you, along with your fellow Disney guests, have been recruited to join their ranks. Congratulations! Other past and future Marvel attractions at Disney Parks around the world are simply part of other Avengers outposts, a clever way to tie everything together.
As for the park itself, the opening centerpiece seems to be a Spider-Man “experience” housed at the Worldwide Engineering Brigade (a building that formerly housed Stark Automotive) called WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man adventure starring Tom Holland in the titular role.
It will eventually be joined by an attraction, opening in phase two, in the Avengers Headquarters building that puts you on a Quinjet with the whole squad. We don’t know much else about it, beyond the fact that it will use an all-new ride system that’s currently in development.
There will also be a restaurant called Pym Test Kitchen serving miniaturized and massive versions of standard foods and the Pym Tasting Lab, a bar with a focus on adult beverages. Disney cast members dressed as Black Widow, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Super Heroes from Wakanda and Asgard, and Iron Man will also roam this new section of the park.
The Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure opens on July 18, 2020.
