"Parasite" director gives moving Golden Globes acceptance speech: 'Once you overcome the one inch tall barrier of subtitles'

Bong Joon Ho is now a history-making film director.

Bong's, "Parasite," is the first Korean movie to take home the Gloden Globe award for best foreign-language film. The South Korean director accepted the award at the 77th Golden Globes on Sunday -- and gave a moving speech that left the room giving him a near-standing ovation.

“Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films,” Bong emotionally said via his translator Sharon Choi when accepting the award. “Just being nominated along with fellow amazing international filmmakers was a huge honor. I think we use only one language: the cinema.”

"Parasite" gained widespread attention in 2019 when the thriller made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Although the film initially opened in three U.S. select theaters, its immediate popularity earned it the title of highest per-screen average for a foreign language of all-time at $152,421.

Bong Joon Ho is also nominated for Best Director - Motion Picture and Best Screenplay - Motion Picture alongside co-writer Han Jin won.
