Paraglider Lands Over Border Fence in Spain's Enclave of Melilla

A person was filmed successfully paragliding into Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla on December 1, with local reports saying the person, thought to be a migrant by authorities, was not found.

Video of the incident was recorded by Andres Jesus Rivas Cazorla, who was travelling along the perimeter road.

Rivas Cazorla told Storyful that he and his friends had never seen anything like it before. “We were in charge of calling the civil guard,” he said.

This comes after the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commissioner, Dunja Mijatovic, declared on November 29 that “there seems to be no other way to enter Melilla and seek protection with the relevant authorities other than by swimming or jumping the fence, risking one’s life.” Mijatovic recommended the situation be addressed “comprehensively.” Credit: Andres Jesus Rivas Cazorla via Storyful
