The AirPods and AirPods Pro are among the most recognizable wireless earbuds on the market today, both using Bluetooth technology to connect to their audio source. If you're an Apple user, knowing how to pair AirPods with your other devices is as simple as holding them nearby.

Instead of having to manually pair and unpair your AirPods from various devices (as most other headphones brands require you to do), you simply need to be signed into your Apple ID and accept the pop-up request to pair on your other Apple devices. This will enable you to switch seamlessly between audio sources so you can listen to the same playlist on your MacBook and your Apple Watch without missing a beat.

Whether you're just setting up your earbuds or you're pairing them with a new device, the steps on how to pair AirPods are simple and can be done in just a few minutes — and the instructions are the same regardless of what AirPods model or generation you're using. Here's what to do.

How to Pair AirPods for the First Time

If this is the first time you're pairing AirPods to any device, whether it's an Apple product or not, this is how to do it.

  1. Turn on the Bluetooth setting on your device.

  2. Open the lid of the charging case and make sure both AirPods are inside.

  3. Hold the setup button on the back of your AirPods case until you see a flashing white light.

  4. In your device's Bluetooth menu, select your AirPods when they pop up, then click "Connect."

Note that if this device is an Apple product, your AirPods will now automatically request to pair with any nearby devices that are linked to the same Apple ID. You can unpair them (instructions at the end) if you don't want to use your AirPods with a certain device.

How to Pair AirPods With an iPhone or iPad

Conveniently, the instructions for pairing your AirPods to an iPhone or iPad are the same.

  1. From the home screen of your device, tap Settings > Bluetooth, then toggle on your Bluetooth setting.

  2. Open the AirPods case with the earbuds inside, and hold it next to your device.

  3. You should see a pop-up on screen with the name and picture of your AirPods. Tap "Connect."

If you don't want to pair your AirPods with a nearby device, simply tap the X in the corner of this notification.

How to Pair AirPods With an Apple Watch

  1. On the home screen of your Apple Watch, tap Settings > Bluetooth.

  2. Tap "AirPods" to connect.

Keep in mind that if your AirPods are connected to your iPhone, they will likely already be paired with your Apple Watch. For example, if you're listening to music through your Apple Watch but you receive a phone call, the music will automatically pause and you will be able to answer without needing to switch to your iPhone.

How to Pair AirPods With an Apple Computer

  1. Make sure your Mac's Bluetooth settings are on by choosing the upper left-hand Apple menu > System Preferences > Bluetooth. Alternatively, you can click the Bluetooth icon in the toolbar and make sure the Bluetooth setting is toggled on.

  2. Open the AirPods case and hold it next to your computer.

  3. You should see a notification about your AirPods pop up on the screen. Click Connect.

How to Unpair AirPods From a Device

If you use various Apple and non-Apple devices, you'll want to know how to manually unpair your AirPods. Just keep in mind that this will remove the AirPods from automatically linking with all of the devices with the same Apple ID.

  1. Navigate to the Bluetooth menu of your device.

  2. Select your AirPods in the list of paired devices and tap the X or "Forget This Device" button.

  3. Select "Confirm."
