Spruce up your mantle or coffee table with this charming DIY decorative vase! On this episode of In The Know: DIY, design doyenne, Tay Beepboop (@taybeepboop) provides a simple step-by-step tutorial for transforming a lump of clay into an eye-catching, personalized vase, guaranteed to give any surface in your home the top-shelf treatment.

Tools & Materials Used

Step 1: Mold The Clay Into A Vase

Use a paint bottle to roll the clay flat. Create the base for the vase by using the bottom of the paint bottle as a template, then carve around it with an X-Acto knife. Create a scalloped edge for the top of the vase by pressing a cake scraper along the border of the flattened rectangular piece of clay. Before combining the two parts, score the clay with an X-Acto knife to easily cement the pieces together.

Step 2: Decorate The Vase

Once the vessel’s structure is set, cut a few decorative shapes and embellishments out of the rest of the clay and super glue them onto the vase.

Step 3: Spray Paint The Vase

To give the vase a sophisticated, stone-like finish, spray it with textured spray paint in a well-ventilated area.

Step 4: Paint The Vase

Grab a paintbrush and your choice of paints, then get creative and paint any edges or trappings on the vase.

Step 5: Make The Vase Water-Safe

If you want to put water in your vase, seal the inside by brushing on a few coats of polyurethane. Once dry, your vase is ready to take center stage on your coffee table.
