Over 2.6 Million Pounds of Canned Meat Recalled Due to Contamination Concerns

The recall affects several brands of Vienna sausages and canned poultry products.

Conagra Brands recalled over 2.6 million pounds of canned meat, including Vienna sausages, due to a packaging defect that could lead to spoiled and contaminated products.

According to a Jan. 30 report filed on the Agriculture Department's website, a Conagra establishment notified officials "after observing spoiled and/or leaking cans from multiple production dates at the establishment’s warehouse."

The affected canned meat and poultry products were produced by Conagra but sold under several brand names.

A majority of the products affected by the recall–tallying nearly a dozen potentially spoiled varieties–were sold in a blue can labeled with the Armour brand. Other brands of Vienna sausages and potted meats were also affected, including products sold by Kroger, Goya, Walmart (Great Value), and Prairie Belt.

The notice also stated that after a subsequent investigation, Conagra determined that the packaging defect on the recalled products may not be readily apparent to consumers, allowing food-borne pathogens to enter cans that look to be undamaged.

The company urged anyone with the recalled products in their pantry to either throw them out or return them to the store they were purchased at.

The affected products were produced between Dec. 12, 2022 and Jan. 13, 2023, and so far, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from those that may have consumed any one of the recalled products.

That said, the recall could not have come at a worse time, as many already have plans to watch the big game alongside a plate of fan-favorite finger foods and other crave-able super bowl snacks that utilize Vienna sausages.

However, there's still some time to run to the store for a replacement, so before you go rolling up those Pigs in a Blanket, be sure to check the label!
