From Town & Country

Ahead of this weekend's season 5 premiere of Outlander, take a look back at the questions we had at the end of season four.

Before we settle in for another lengthy Droughtlander—at this point, it's unclear when Outlander season five will premiere—we have a few questions about "Man Of Worth." Here's what we're still wrestling with after the season four finale.

Is Stephen Bonnet still alive?

Murtagh told Jamie that Bonnet died in the jail explosion, but there’s a chance that the pirate is still alive. We saw Bonnet recover the keys before the blast, but it’s still unconfirmed if he made it out before the fire consumed his cell.

Did Fergus and Marsali ever make it to Fraser's Ridge?

They blew up a building, and that's pretty much the last we saw of this couple. Did they escape into the woods? Or get caught on the edge of town?

Will Ian stay with the Mohawks for good?

When Claire and Jamie leave Ian with the Mohawks, he seems intent on becoming a member of the tribe, telling his uncle that he doesn’t want to break his word. But Ian is also a fan favorite on the show, and something tells me we haven't seen the last of him on the series.

Is Fraser's Ridge still in danger of burning?

Brianna traveled through the stones earlier this season with a mission: to save her parents from an impending fire at Fraser's Ridge. Thanks to a smudge on the newspaper clipping, it's unclear exactly when the blaze will take place, but Jamie and Claire appear to be safe for now. That said, the lingering question remains: Will Brianna be able to change history?

What made Roger come back?

After Claire and Jamie rescue Roger from the Mohawks, they tell him what happened to Brianna, and that her baby might not be his. Roger says he needs some time to think, and then, honestly, who knows what happened? Clearly some time elapses, and Claire and Jamie arrive back at River Run without him, much to Bree's disappointment. But just a few scenes later, Bree gazes out her window to see Roger riding slowly up the path. She races outside, and they share their second emotional reunion of the season. But what changed Roger's mind? And how did he find his way back to North Carolina on his own?

Is Brianna’s baby Bonnet’s? Or Roger’s?

At the end of season four, it’s still unclear who fathered Brianna's child. But as Lord John Grey and Frank Randall both made abundantly clear earlier in the series, a blood relation isn’t required to be a loving parent. At the end of the finale, Roger asks to see his son, and perhaps, that’s all that really matters.

What’s next for Murtagh?

Despite having broken out of prison, Murtagh is a wanted man (both by the red coats, and Aunt Jocasta), and the final scenes of the season reveal that Jamie has been ordered by Governor Tryon to hunt him down. It’s hard to imagine Jamie turning over his godfather to a certain death, but that conflict leads to my final question...

Are we veering further away from the books?

The Outlander fandom is passionate about, well, pretty much everything regarding the series, but fans are particularly vocal about how closely the show follows the plot of the books. Murtagh even appearing in this season was a major deviation from the series—by this point in Diana Gabaldon’s original story, his character had passed away. If the action of season five centers around Jamie struggling to protect Murtagh without endangering himself and the rest of his family, one has to wonder if the TV show has larger plans to diverge from its source material.
