Outlander fans consider Jamie Fraser to be one of the most romantic characters on television. But Sam Heughan, the actor who plays the 18th-century Scot, seems to be still looking for love in the real world.

He hasn't publicly shared his relationship status.

After Heughan was spotted kissing a woman in New York City shortly after the premiere of Outlander season six, Drew Barrymore asked the actor about his love life.

"The job is so all-encompassing and we spend so much time on set and at work," he said. "But I'm open to something. I'm not sure what I'm saying I'm open for, but I'm open."

In a 2020 interview ahead of season five, Heughan revealed the demands of his job, and the toll his acting career has taken on his personal life.

“Certainly, relationships are hard when you’re working in Scotland 10 months a year. I travel a lot and any downtime I have, I’m trying to do other projects, so very much, my career comes first. Maybe I will find someone eventually," he said.

“My whole career, not just ‘Outlander’ but as an actor, I have always put that first. It’s hard when you travel a lot. My priority has been my career, so that’s where I am at the moment. But I am sure at some point, I will get knocked off my feet, then I’m screwed (laughs).”

But what about his co-star Caitriona Balfe?

Heughan's chemistry with his on-screen wife Caitriona Balfe is certainly convincing, but in real life, they're just good actors and very close friends.

“She is such a wonderful woman—intelligent and creative,” Heughan recently said of his Outlander co-star. “More than anything, she’s a good friend."

Balfe married her longtime partner music producer Antony "Tony" McGill in August of 2019. Heughan seems to have been in attendance at the intimate ceremony in Bruton, England. But before she tied the knot, Balfe spoke with Parade Magazine about the fans who want Balfe and Heughan to get together off screen.

"There’s a small vocal group that really wanted it, which is just a testament to the characters that we portray, that the love story is so inspiring and so aspirational that people just really wanted to believe in it," she said. "And that’s a nice thing. But I think things are pretty clear now that I’m engaged to someone else. Everyone gets it now."

Heughan is something of a romantic.

Fans would expect nothing less from the man who plays Jamie Fraser. For example, when he was asked in an interview with Parade if the kind of love between Jamie and Claire exists in the real world, he said, "I think there is, and I think we all aspire to it."

"I think that’s maybe why Diana Gabaldon’s books have done so well and why we have a great family of people that buy into that," he continued.

"I think it’s something that we all aspire to and aim for so, yeah, I would like to think it’s real and I’d like to think that one day I could have that myself."

He keeps his private life private.

Heughan rarely comments on his personal life. In the past, he's been linked to Twin Peaks: The Return actress Amy Shiels, but it seems as though they're currently just friends.

He also reportedly dated actress and singer MacKenzie Mauzy in the past. Heughan told Harper's Bazaar back in 2017 that he and Mauzy met at an "industry event," and that their relationship had unfortunately let to Mauzy being targeted by social media trolls. "Initially, it is upsetting but, ultimately, it doesn't mean anything. It feels like a schoolyard thing,” he said diplomatically.
