  • Caitriona Balfe posted a tweet confirming that she is not pregnant.

  • The Outlander star also took the opportunity to remind her followers that it's not appropriate to ask a woman this question.

  • "Just having my period and was bloated," Balfe wrote, concluding her tweet with the hashtag "Not all stomachs are washboards."

Caitriona Balfe is not expecting-and more to the point, she would like social media commenters (and everyone else) to stop asking that question. The Outlander star took to Twitter to set the record straight, after reportedly being inundated with fans inquiring whether or not she was pregnant. The onslaught came in response to a photo Balfe shared of herself, Outlander co-star Sam Heughan and 50 Cent at a recent For Your Consideration event for the Starz drama.

“To all those who think it’s appropriate to ask,” Balfe wrote, “No, I’m not pregnant. Just having my period and was bloated… So yeah… Thanks for asking." She concluded her post with a pair of hashtags: "Not really" and "Not all stomachs are washboards.”

Sigh. Setting aside how rude this question is from a body image perspective, it's also incredibly insensitive to ask given how many women encounter fertility issues–and for that matter, how many women have no interest in having children. All in all, can we just agree that the best time to ask this particular question is... never?

Balfe confirmed at the 2018 Golden Globes that she's engaged to her longtime boyfriend Tony McGill. "It happened over the break," she told People at the event. "I'm very happy." The couple have seemingly been together since at least 2015, and Balfe has said that McGill prefers them to keep things private. "He's a very shy person and he doesn't like much talking about him," she said last year, per The Independent. "I met him through one of my best friends, which I think is the best kind of introduction you can get."
