Outlander fans, the historical drama is far from being over and we're not the only ones eager for more of the Fraser clan.

Time-traveling couple Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) will return to STARZ with season 7 sometime later this year as filming is already afoot. To add to the excitement, Variety reported that there is an Outlander prequel in the works courtesy of showrunner Matthew B. Roberts.

According to the outlet, he's set to executive produce and write the Outlander prequel with the help of a writers' room, which will "begin work in the coming weeks." The exact plot and show title is being kept under wraps, but we predict two routes that the new show could go: 1) Diana's 2013 Virgins prequel novella about a young Jamie and Ian in 1740s France 2) Diana's prequel about Jamie's parents that is still being written. That said, there has been no confirmation that the prequel TV series will be based on either of these stories.

Nevertheless, we do know that the prequel news isn't just rumors — the Highlander himself confirmed it. During an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sam shared some insight on the new series and his role in it. “I didn’t realize it was so far advanced," he said. I saw Diana [Gabaldon] this weekend, and she was writing furiously.”

Sam added: “I know they’re really excited, I’m excited for them and I’m slightly jealous as well. I wonder if I can get in there.”

Perhaps a cameo is at play? In the meantime, the upcoming prequel isn't the only thing that fans can get excited about. The cast and crew returned to the Scottish countryside earlier this year to begin production on season 7. It will be based on Diana's book An Echo in the Bone, following Claire and Jamie living in the new world amidst the Revolutionary War. Like the new season's trailer teased, the seventh season will include 16 new episodes as Catriona calls it a "mega-sized season for you to come back to, so get through this next Droughtlander."

So far, actors Caitriona, Sam, Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin have been confirmed to reprise their roles. Now, folks can look forward to a seventh installment and a prequel.
