Outdoor Voices Relaunched Its Best-Selling Exercise Dress

Last summer, Outdoor Voices convinced me to try doing things in a dress. The buzzy fitness brand launched The Exercise Dress, a piece designed to move and work out in, whether that's hiking, dancing, running, or barre class. It's made with stretchy, sweat-wicking nylon fabric, has a built-in leotard, and comes in a handful of solid colors and fun prints.

I wasn't the only one that was easily influenced. The Exercise Dress quickly became one of OV's best sellers and has a 5-star rating from customers. OV tells me that it's the most-reviewed item on the brand's site and fans are constantly requesting additional colors.

The dress also exploded all over Instagram. Here are a few of my favorite ways it's been styled so far.

When I wore the dress on a jog, I was surprised at how functional it was to exercise in. It didn't ride or flip up, and the fabric kept me cool. I was worried that the dress wouldn't offer enough support, but it did. (Disclaimer: I don't have a large chest. Those who do may want to layer a sports bra underneath.)

What I didn't like about the dress is that, although the leotard provided enough coverage while I was moving around, it left me with a next-day rash from my thighs rubbing together while I was jogging. I wasn't alone. Aside from the demand for more color options, OV got feedback to update the dress with a shorts liner. So they did.

Officially relaunching today, August 15, The Exercise Dress is back with a lightweight shorts liner. The shorts fit similar to bike shorts, and have an extremely convenient pocket on the left leg to stash your keys, credit card, and phone. The piece is still made with moisture-resistant fabric so that you can sweat a lot without feeling soaked during a post-class coffee or brunch.

I was given a navy dress by the brand to try ahead of the launch. While the shorts make the dress even more comfortable, I still probably wouldn't wear it while doing pilates or Barry's Bootcamp, my go-to workouts. However, it would be perfect for hiking, and I wish I had it before I went on a trail while I was in L.A. the other week. So far I've worn the revamped dress while running errands and grabbing coffee. I threw a T-shirt on underneath it and paired it with sneakers. I have to say, the sweat-proof fabric is great for walking around in the humidity, and I felt like I actually put effort in my outfit instead of my usual T-shirt and leggings combo.
