'Our Girl' cancelled after Michelle Keegan's exit

Our Girl will not be continuing for a fifth series, it has been confirmed.

The military drama, which has aired on the BBC since 2014, has come to an end following Michelle Keegan's exit from the programme.

Creator and writer Tony Grounds told Radio Times: “With the finale of series four showing Georgie ready to move on with her life, it feels like the right time for us to do the same.”

He teased a potential return for the character in the future as he added: "Michelle and I are keen to continue our working relationship and, who knows, maybe we’ll catch up with Georgie in the future. I wanted to say a big thank you to the fans of the show, it’s been a joy to write."

Keegan, 33, announced she would be leaving the role of Georgie Lane behind back in January this year.

“I’ve had the most incredible four years on the show and I want to thank the BBC for giving me such an amazing opportunity.

“Playing Georgie has been a life changing role for me. I’ve loved every second of the adventure so it was a very hard decision to make not to return," she said at the time.

The former Coronation Street star began leading the programme in 2016 after taking over from EastEnders actor Lacey Turner who played Private Molly Dawes.

Series two saw her act in a five-episode series following by a series three split into two halves, aired across 2017 and 2018. The fourth and final season aired earlier in the year.

The finale saw Georgie make peace with the past after granting mercy to the man who killed her fiancee Elvis (Luke Pasqualino) and sending her engagement into the sky on a kite.
