  • Netflix's Otherhood stars Felicity Huffman, Angela Bassett, and Patricia Arquette.

  • Though it was initially set to be released in June, the movie has been pushed back for an August 2019 release.

Empty nesters, rejoice! Netflix has added a new original film to its lineup this fall: Otherhood, which will illustrate the emotional rollercoaster mothers experience once their kids move out or go off to college. It's the perfect feel-good movie to watch when the excitement of Mother's Day settles down and just before back-to-school season.

Based on William Sutcliffe's novel Whatever Makes You Happy, Netflix announced on June 21, 2018 that Felicity Huffman, 56, would be joining the cast, along with Angela Bassett, 60, and Patricia Arquette, 51. Filming also started around June 2018, and paparazzi photographed the three women as they were walking around New York City's SoHo neighborhood shooting what appears to be a scene from the movie.

Otherhood marks Bassett's first time appearing in a Netflix original film. And in addition, Huffman can be seen in the upcoming Netflix docuseries, When They See Us, where she'll portray real-life prosecutor Linda Fairstein, who oversaw the wrongful prosecution of the five teenagers known as the Central Park Five. Meanwhile, Oscar-winner Arquette is starring opposite Joey King in Hulu's binge-worthy anthology series, The Act.

Ahead of Otherhood's release in August, here's everything you need to know about the female-led comedy, including how Huffman's admissions case scandal played a part in the movie's release date.

When is the Otherhood release date?

When details about Otherhood first emerged in June 2018, the film was set to launch on April 26, 2019. Now, however, it will be available on the streaming platform on August 2 at 12 a.m. PT.

Netflix delayed the release of the film after Huffman agreed to plead guilty to the charges against her in the college admissions cheating scandal. Huffman faces one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest-services mail fraud, which comes with a maximum sentence of five years in prison. As of now, Netflix plans to move forward with releasing the film on August 2, as well as When They See Us on May 31, which also features Huffman.

According to People, Huffman's co-star Bassett is also supportive of her guilty plea.

"No, I haven’t reached out to her," Bassett told People. "She hasn’t reached out to me. She’s a little busy, but you know we worked together. We had a wonderful time together. I wish the best for her and I was very proud of her. How she handled herself recently to take ownership of her actions. That’s what a woman does."

What is Otherhood about?

Otherhood offers an honest and hilarious glimpse into the lives of three suburban moms. Longtime BFFs Carol Walker (Bassett), Gillian Lieberman (Arquette), and Helen Halston (Huffman) feel neglected by their three adult sons-on Mother's Day, no less. In an effort to reconnect with their kids, they drive to New York, only to have their deepest fears confirmed by the guys' newfound independence in the big city. When their attempts to meddle in their sons' personal and professional lives fail, Carol, Gillian, and Helen are forced to find purpose in their lives beyond marriage and motherhood.

Who is in the cast of Otherhood?

Otherhood includes a mix of rising stars and veteran actors, including Bassett, Arquette, and Huffman.

Jake Lacy plays Paul Halston, a gay man who hasn't come out to his mother, Helen (Huffman). Sinqua Walls steps into the role of Matt Walker, a single art director and son of Carol (Bassett). Jake Hoffman plays Daniel Lieberman, a lovestruck writer and only child of Gillian (Arquette). Former Ugly Betty star Becki Newton, Heidi Gardner (of Saturday Night Live fame), and Afton Williamson round out the cast.

Cindy Chupack, who served as writer and executive producer on HBO's Sex and the City series, also co-wrote the script and directed Otherhood.

Is there a trailer for Otherhood?

No, but Netflix representatives confirmed with OprahMag.com that the trailer would be released closer to the film's release date.
