Oscars 2020: Laura Dern’s Mom Tears Up as Her Daughter Wins Her First Academy Award

Accepting her first ever Academy Award at Oscars 2020, an emotional—and exceptionally radiant—Laura Dern thanked her date: her mom.

Holding the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story (she had been nominated previously for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress), Dern, 53, beamed. “Some say never meet your heroes," she told the crowd. "I say if you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents. I share this with my acting hero my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern. You got game. I love you.” Even in a genre known for moving tributes to moms, the exchange between mother and daughter was surprisingly heart-slicing.

Ladd, 84, watched her daughter with tears brimming in her eyes. For the family, Dern's win is the culmination of a long and public Oscars journey. Ladd is a three-time Oscar nominee. Bruce Dern, 83, has had two nominations. They first attended the Oscars in 1975 with Laura, then eight years old, when Ladd was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More. In 1991, Ladd and Dern became the first mother-daughter pair to receive Academy Award nominations for the same movie, when both women were nominated for their roles in Rambling Rose.

And in 2015, when Dern was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie Wild, Ladd launched a campaign to support her daughter on the awards circuit, calling her performance "light-filled" and "magically effervescent." (This is why we love supportive moms.)

Dern took Oscars 2020 as an opportunity to honor Ladd even before her win. The two walked the red carpet together and served as each other's dates. Ladd's face, during her daughter's win, projected unadulterated joy and pride.

Strong women supporting strong women. We hope Armani doesn't mind if a few of the tassels on Dern's dress become tissues.
