Olympic Figure Skater Changes Her Costume Mid-Performance

Forget what the judges say, full points!

French figure skater Maé-Bérénice Méité proved that she will do whatever it takes to get a head-turning edge while competing in the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. During the women’s single free skate program that aired in America on Thursday night, Maé-Bérénice added a slight costume change to her routine mid-skate. She skated the first half of her program wearing a tuxedo-inspired white long sleeve top and solid black skirt. Then, right as the song changed, Maé-Bérénice pulled back part of her black skirt to reveal a bejeweled panel underneath that she skated with for the rest of the routine.

This much-talked-about skate is coming on the heels of her short program at the beginning of the week, where Maé-Bérénice skated to Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls).” On top of that, she wore a look that consisted of an embellished tank and black pants, which stood out amongst the traditional brightly colored skirted leotard costumes that most women wear.

This most recent performance has many people on social media, including unofficial Olympic commenter Leslie Jones, freaking out. "I like when they do stuff like this!" the actress wrote. EW's Brittany Kaplan echoed Leslie's excitement, tweeting, "Costume change! At the Olympics- love the flair!" Another user added, "She totally surprised me with the costume and music change! She looked like she was having so much fun during the second half of her skate! She had the biggest smile on her face! It was really fun to watch her!"

Though Maé-Bérénice’s final score was not enough to get her on the podium last night (with 159.92 she fell into fourth place), it’s a sure bet that her performance will go down in history.
