Just because Olivia Colman is no longer starring as Queen Elizabeth on The Crown doesn’t mean she’s going to be excluded from the next awards circuit. And this brand-new trailer is proof.

Netflix just dropped the first official teaser for its upcoming movie The Lost Daughter, which was written, directed and produced by Maggie Gyllenhaal. (NBD.)

The trailer introduces viewers to the gripping story, which is based on Elena Ferrante’s namesake novel. The plot revolves around a middle-aged woman named Leda (Colman), who embarks on a seemingly idyllic “working holiday.” When she meets a young mother named Nina (Dakota Johnson), she begins having flashbacks to her early days as a mom of two daughters (played by Jessie Buckley).

“Children are a crushing responsibility,” Leda tells Nina, who’s overwhelmed and exhausted. “She’s driving me crazy,” Nina replies. Although the clip doesn’t give too much away, one thing’s for sure: Colman’s performance may just be Oscar-worthy.

Other cast members include Dagmara Domińczyk (Callie), Peter Sarsgaard (Professor Hardy), Paul Mescal (Will), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (Toni), Ed Harris (Lyle) and Jack Farthing (Joe).

Netflix’s official synopsis reads, “A woman’s quiet seaside vacation takes an unsettling turn when her fixation on a young mother staying at a nearby villa awakens memories from her past.”

The Lost Daughter originally premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it received multiple positive reviews, but it hasn’t yet been released to the public. The film will hit Netflix on December 31, along with select theaters.
