Oleksandr Gvozdyk released from hospital two days after Artur Beterbiev fight
Oleksandr Gvozdyk spent two days in the hospital, but avoided the worst-case scenario. Following Friday’s loss to Artur Beterbiev, Gvozdyk was taken to the hospital due to pain in the back of his head.
The main fear was that the 32-year-old Gvozdyk was dealing with brain bleed. After a number of tests, it was determined that wasn’t the case. Gvozdyk is dealing with a concussion, according to ESPN.
"All is clear," Teddy Atlas, Gvozdyk's trainer, who accompanied him to the hospital, told ESPN on Sunday. "No [brain] bleed or anything. Thank God, just a minor concussion from the hits to the back of the head they said, but we needed to be sure."
Gvozdyk suffered that concussion during his fight with Beterbiev. While Gvozdyk got off to a strong start in that fight, he took some big hits as the fight went on. The fight was stopped in the 10th, after Gvozdyk was knocked down three times by Beterviev in that round.
An hour after the fight ended, Gvozdyk walked to the ambulance at the arena, and decided to get checked out at the hospital for head pain. Gvozdyk’s tainer, Teddy Atlas, said Gvozdyk had to undergo multiple tests over the course of 24 hours, which is why he remained in the hospital for so long.
The fight marked the first time Gvozdyk lost as a professional. Prior to the fight with Beterbiev, Gvozdyk was a perfect 17-0. Beterbiev remained undefeated with the win, and is now 15-0. The win also allowed Beterbiev to unify light heavyweight titles.
The fight also marked the first bout since boxer Patrick Day died after injuries he sustained during a fight. Day, 27, died of head trauma Wednesday, days after he was knocked out against Charles Conwell.
