Okay, We Found Out Jack's Fate in the 'Virgin River' Books After Watching That Season 2 Cliffhanger

Mel Monroe and Jack Sheridan were so. close. to a happily ever after at the end of Virgin River season 2. (Spoiler alert: If you haven't finished watching season 2, quit reading and sign in to your Netflix account now!).

Mel was coming to terms with the anniversary of her husband's death, and she seemed destined for a second chance at love with Jack, even though he's expecting twins with Charmaine. But the show takes a shocking turn and ends in a major cliffhanger: Mel arrives at Jack's Bar to meet him, and finds him lying on the ground, bleeding from a gunshot wound.

Viewers are left to wonder who shot Jack (someone from Calvin's drug organization? Brady? evil Wes's evil twin brother, Vince?), and, more importantly, if he survives. Surely, Mel and Jack wouldn't get this close to happiness only to have it end in tragedy, right?

Because we won't know what happens for sure until Virgin River returns for season 3 (Netflix hasn't officially confirmed another season and we are holding our breath), all we can do in the meantime is speculate on the fate of the Virgin River cast and search for clues. Luckily, the show is based on a series of 21 books by Robyn Carr, so there's plenty of material to investigate.

Does Jack Die in the Virgin River Books?

The 21st book in Robyn Carr's series was released this year, but not all of the books focus on Jack and Mel. Book 1 centers on our favorite couple, and the subsequent books examine the relationships of other couples (like Preacher and Paige) in the tight-knit small town.

Jack doesn't die in the Virgin River books (cue all the feelings). In an interview with Parade.com, showrunner Sue Tenney explains, “If you have read the books, we all know that Jack and Mel are destined to be together.” Whew. In fact, Mel and Jack have children together (son David in book 2 and daughter Emma in book 5), so their relationship is bound for longevity. Of course, like any book-to-show adaptation, there are bound to be some differences (in the books, for example, Mel's husband Mark dies in a convenience store robbery rather than a car accident), but we're encouraged that Jack will survive to continue his relationship with Mel and face his demons in season 3. We can't wait for the next installment!
