Oh no, Sabra just recalled a bunch of hummus so check your fridge
We all know that expiration dates can sometimes be considered mere suggestions (nothing compares to the good old fashioned sniff test), but this time it’s serious. Sabra just released a voluntary product recall of 57 of their items, and the answer to whether or not you should dump your hummus is in that expiration date.
According to Sabra, consumers should discard any of their products with a “best before” label dating up through January 23, 2017. Concerns over Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria which causes dangerous infections, motivated Sabra’s recall. There are a lot of flavors involved, so check the list on the company website to be sure. Also, there’s some good news: Sabra Organic Hummus, Sabra Salsa, Sabra Guacamole and Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips aren’t included in the recall. So dip freely.
This isn’t Sabra’s first problem with listeria. Back in April, 2015 Sabra recalled their Classic Hummus flavors. Just as potential for contamination was discovered in that case, this recall is occurring after traces of the infection were found in the manufacturing facility rather than the finished products, so there haven’t been any illnesses yet, but seriously — it’s not worth it.
In their statement, Sabra clarified,
“We want to reassure our consumers that our procedures include extensive finished product testing, and no products tested positive for contaminants. We are taking action because consumer safety is a top priority.”
Chances are you and your hummus are going to be okay, but in these situations it’s best to err on the side of caution. According to the CDC, listeriosis — the disease caused by contaminated food, poses a greater risk for elderly people, pregnant women, and babies. Symptoms of the bacterial infection include stiff neck, fever, which may follow with diarrhea.
If you’re angry that the Sabra hummus you just bought won’t last you into 2017 because of this recall (who are we kidding — if you can make your hummus last even a week you’re a hero), you can contact the company for reimbursement.
