'Oh Canada' erupts after Henderson's dominant showing in Regina

The eyes of the country were squarely on Brooke Henderson at the CP Women’s Open in Regina, Saskatchewan, this weekend — and nobody had more pressure on them to perform.

Yet, the 20-year-old phenom refused to blink.

She is now a champion and the first Canadian to win an event on home soil since Jocelyne Bourassa in 1973.

Henderson entered the final round with a one-stroke lead and seemed to be on a mission all day.

The Smiths Falls, Ontario, product had an answer every time the field made a move and looked to challenge. Instead of giving the opposition a sniff at the crown, she birdied five of her last seven holes to post a final-round 65. Only Mo Martin’s course record of 10-under 62 was better on Sunday.

Henderson finished the tournament at 21-under to defeat runner-up Angel Yin by four strokes.

With a three-shot advantage after 71 holes, Henderson blasted a drive down the fairway of the par-4 18th at the Wascana Country Club and chipped it close. As she walked to the green, the thousands of fans on hand were roaring. Everyone knew that she had broken the 45-year drought for Canadian golfers north of the border.

A nice putt for birdie sealed it and so began the celebration.

And in true Canadian fashion, the fans in attendance showed their appreciation by singing the national anthem after the putt fell.

Classic Canada, am I right?

If Canadians haven’t been tuning in to what Henderson has been doing early in her career, they’ll be watching now.

Ten events remain on the schedule for the 2018 LPGA season, including The Evian Championship (the final major of the year) from Sept. 13-16.
