Oh Boy: AccuWeather Just Released Its Winter Weather Predictions for the Upcoming Season
It’s finally fall, which can only mean one thing: Winter is coming.
Depending on where you live, last winter really was miserable. Luckily, things are already looking better for the season ahead. AccuWeather just released its annual weather forecast for winter 2020-2021 and experts are predicting that an “overall mild winter is possible” for much of the United States.
A team of long-range forecasters, including Senior Meteorologist Paul Pastelok, has been busy analyzing global weather patterns and models to predict what will happen across the country after December 21.
“Near-normal snowfall” is expected on the East Coast, and the region will likely experience cold and snowy conditions near the start and end of the season, with a pause in the wintry weather in the middle.
A cold snap could kick off the season in the Southeast, and even Floridians may need to break out their jackets. However, temperatures are projected to level out as winter carries on. (Phew!)
If you live in the Plains or Rocky Mountains, the weather may not be as predictable. “The middle of the nation may go through some big swings in temperatures, [and] dry and active periods,” Paul explained, noting that there may be “periods of subzero cold.” So, if you live there—start shopping for a new winter coat!
West Coasters should enjoy fall while it lasts, because wintry weather may make an early appearance this year. “Mountain snow and stormy conditions may arrive in late fall for the Northwest, northern California and northern Rockies,” Paul said. While you may not love snow, the early storms are actually a good thing. It has been a devastating wildfire season across the region, and the arrival of winter could finally put an end to it.
