Although it seemed like 2024 might've been Paul Giamatti’s year, The Holdovers wasn't enough to earn the Billions actor his first Academy Award for Best Actor. He did nab the Golden Globe away from Cillian Murphy, however, so we holdovers will take our wins where we can get them! Thankfully, Da'Vine Joy Randolph still took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

The feel-good Christmas tale, which is directed by Alexander Payne, stars Giamatti as a curmudgeonly New England schoolteacher who is forced to watch over the kids who can't go home for the holidays. Randolph plays the school cafeteria manager and a bereaved mother, who lost her son in the Vietnam War. For so long, I’ve always wanted to be different," Randolph said as she accepted her award. "And now I realize I just need to be myself, and I thank you for seeing me."

The Holdovers is Payne's second collaboration with Giamatti (surely, you'll remember their first: 2004's Sideways), and was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. Giamatti told The New York Times that he was surprised by the film's success. “I think it’s a great movie; it’s a wonderful movie,” he said. “But I didn’t imagine, for me, this being something that people would take to so much. It’s great. It’s really nice."

If you didn’t get a chance to see The Holdovers in theaters, don’t worry; it’s not too late to add this award-winning film to your queue. You can rent The Holdovers at home on Prime Video, Apple TV, and YouTube. The film is also streaming exclusively for Peacock subscribers.
