We’re living in the most unpredictable week, in the most unpredictable year, of what we hope won’t be the most unpredictable decade. Perfect timing to be one week out from the most important election of our lives thus far. But there is one fixture of our pre-Trump era that we’ll be able to rely on, no matter what happens next week—Jon Steward behind a desk.

On Tuesday afternoon, Apple TV+ announced that it is teaming up with the former host of The Daily Show on a “new, original current affairs series.” The unnamed TV series—which doesn’t have a release date yet—will mark Stewart’s first return to hosting his own show since his Daily Show exit in 2015. By the sound of Apple TV+’s press release, Stewart’s series sounds like it’ll lean a little less Daily Show, and a little more Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, with deep-dives on single issues:

“The multiple season, one-hour, single-issue series will explore topics that are currently part of the national conversation and his advocacy work. Each season of the series will be further explored in a companion podcast to continue the discussion.”

It’s been a long time coming for the return of Stewart, who’s probably seen the most nowadays (or, at least before the pandemic) popping up on the odd cameo in The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and fighting on behalf of 9/11 first responders in front of congress. You might remember that Stewart had something big cooking with HBO a few years ago—an animated, short-form TV series—but those plans were mutually scrapped back in 2017. Aside from that, Stewart has put his energy into into advocacy work, in addition to directing this summer’s Steve Carell-led political comedy, Irresistable.

It might be a little bit before we get any more details about Stewart’s show. He’ll probably have to, you know, change the gameplan slightly depending on who wins the presidency. But seven days our from the anxiety inducing bid for the highest office in the land, it sure is nice to know a familiar face is back in action.
