Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer shine as leading ladies in Netflix's brand new superhero flick Thunder Force. The dynamic duo play estranged besties who must come together and form their own superhero squad in order to save Chicago from an evil villain played by Bobby Cannavale.

While watching Melissa and Octavia do their thing, it becomes obvious that the two actresses are great together on camera. Turns out, there's a reason for that — they aren't only best friends on the silver screen.

Are Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy friends in real life?

The two actresses met more than two decades ago and have been cheering each other on ever since. Their friendship began in the 1990s when Melissa and her then-boyfriend and now-husband Ben Falcone performed with the L.A. comedy troupe The Groundlings. After moving to California, Octavia would regularly come out to watch their Sunday shows. The three were introduced through their mutual friend and fellow actor Tate Taylor.

“[Octavia’s] laugh was so amazing in the audience that it made other people laugh, so I’m pretty sure that they weren’t really laughing at us as much as they were laughing because of [Octavia’s] laugh,” Melissa said in a Buzzfeed interview. “We would always call Tate and ask, ‘Is Octavia coming?’ It was like we met and then we were always together in that group.”

Over time, the two became close friends and championed each other's successes. Melissa would go on to earn praise for her iconic roles in Mike & Molly, Bridesmaids and Can You Ever Forgive Me? In Hollywood, Octavia’s career also soared. Most notably, she won her first Academy Award for The Help in 2012. Her Oscar nominations for Hidden Figures and The Shape of Water later followed.

With 25 years of friendship under their belts, the two jumped on the opportunity to star in Thunder Force together. It was Ben who approached them about the superhero film, which he wrote, directed and appeared in.

Melissa and Octavia have worked together once before, though. While guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2017, Melissa interviewed Octavia and revealed that the two had been featured in an Ask Al segment back in the day. (Watch the clip below at 5:54 minute.)

“I knew you pre-anything, pre-before we were working,” Melissa said to Octavia on the late-night show. “People always know we know each other. Do you get, ‘Why don’t you work together more?’ … I get that a lot. I say, ‘We want to, but we have.’ And I don’t think a lot of people know we have, indeed, worked together.”

Ahead of Thunder Force premiering on Netflix, Melissa and Octavia shared throwback photos on Instagram to commemorate their long friendship. “I’m #stillbestfriends with @melissamccarthy and it’s the best!” Octavia wrote.

Melissa also posted a curated photo gallery on Instagram with nearly a dozen snapshots of them together. She began the roundup with a sweet pic of her and Octavia hugging at her 2005 wedding.

“After 20+ years, I'm #stillbestfriends with the incredible @octaviaspencer and I wouldn't have it any other way❤️,” Melissa captioned. “And yes, she caught the bouquet at my wedding!! 💐😊.”

Speaking with People, Melissa shared what’s it's been like knowing Octavia all this time.

"My girls have not known a minute of their lives without Octavia,” Melissa told the outlet. “In some ways, she's not changed one bit. Her moral compass is no different from the day I met her. Her kindness is no different. She uses her talents and resources for good."

Not surprising, Octavia feels the same way about her on-and off-screen best friend. She told ScreenRant.com: “It was a gift for me because I got to play opposite one of my dearest friends in the world; one of the most gifted actresses in the world.”
