Notre Dame’s upset of No. 1 Tennessee draws massive number

Notre Dame head baseball coach Link Jarrett said before the Fighting Irish got on the plane to head to Knoxville last weekend he told anyone who would listen how important that series would be not just for the two programs but instead for all of college baseball.

As you know by now, Notre Dame stunned the college baseball world in upsetting the Volunteers and earning their third spot in program history in the College World Series.  With Sunday’s deciding game being a thriller it’s hardly a surprise that the masses tuned into watch it.

The average viewership for the contest was 916,000 viewers with the peak coming in at 1.2 million.  It was the second-most watched Super Regional contest on ESPN since 2019.

In number of viewers it might not be the biggest number college baseball has seen in that long of a time but in terms of Jarrett was certainly right in it’s appeal to the masses.

The Irish now await a date with Texas in Omaha on Friday night as they get started in the 2022 College World Series.
